In respect of the science, the impact of increasing concentrations of CO2 on atmospheric gases and then applying sunlight can be trivially demonstrated in a laboratory — temperature rises. Dissent on that point is unusual, and at any rate is not the business of the IEA, which looks at how market mechanisms can be used to address the challenges that follow. Scientific disagreement on exactly how and how fast increases in emissions of CO2 impact global temperatures remains a reality that the Guardian seems keen to dispute.

Again that is not the primary interest and expertise of the IEA. If we turn instead to matters of policy, which is our remit, there are a huge range of views on how governments should address climate change, if indeed they should, and this applies as much within the free market school of thought as is does within other points of view. Or to question the motives of those making such calls, whether for reasons of corporate rent-seeking, or ideological opportunism. In short, the Guardian would benefit from engaging with our authors as serious, sensible, and thoughtful contributors to addressing this global challenge, rather than demanding we delete thought.

That is a position with which no serious proponent of the free press should be flirting, however much they believe their own assertions about a crisis. But we deal with them, and will continue to publish thoughtful, well researched pieces on free market solutions to environmental challenges.

Their primary residence is an obscure compound known as Wolford, located within a large forest along the Canada—United States border. Wolford is home to a clandestine, normal-looking mansion, surrounded by a large gate with a keycard system.

Upon reaching maturity, some of the Shifters venture outward to live among normal human society, while others work as forest guides, deterring outsiders from the compound. Within the series, transformed Shifters typically have the appearances of normal wolves, as opposed to anthropomorphic creatures. They possess enhanced strength, senses, and healing, but are vulnerable to silver and attacks from one another. After reaching the age of 17 or 18, depending on gender, a Shifter's first transformation will usually occur during a full moon.

Following this event, they are able to initiate the change at will. Traditionally, a male Shifter will endure the first transformation alone, then choose a female mate prior to her change.

If the girl accepts, the male will help guide the female Shifter through her first transformation. A romantic bond is often present between the pair, usually before mating, and occasionally after. Following their first change, some Shifters also become Dark Guardians, who work to conceal and defend Wolford from outsiders.

Each novel focuses on a selected protagonist among the cast, following their relationship with a love interest.

Additionally, these characters make minor appearances in the other installments. Each book also expands upon the growing conflict between the Dark Guardians and their enemies, including a research organization called Bio-Chrome. The series began in , with HarperCollins seeking to publish a new paranormal story. After Hawthorne submitted two scenarios—one involving vampires and the other surrounding werewolves—her publisher eventually chose the latter. Despite the new series being a BBC co-production with HBO, it looks so far as though these ideas will not be compromised this time round.

So much so, in fact, that there have been concerns raised that this is too dark to be suitable for children. But children will take from the material whatever they are ready for — be it insights into the convoluted heart of man, or delighted fascination at the idea of having a talking animal to accompany you wherever you go. And, just occasionally, the material will ready them for something else. That is what books — and prestige TV dramas — are for. Facebook Twitter Pinterest.
